Review on Variable Height Finger Freud 99 039 by Bashar Shaffer

Excellent finger jointing nozzle

I received the Freud 90-039 finger jointing nozzle because it was the only nozzle that could handle wood over 1.5 inches thick. I used this attachment to connect a massive desktop. Constructed from 8 quarters (1.58 inch) thick white oak. This made a very accurate connection in one pass on the router table (some of the posts I've read talked about using multiple passes and I agree, but going through 60" boards in one pass made everything so much faster and easier did it nice and slow). The highlight of this nozzle is the setting. You need a completely flat router table and some thorough testing. I used some scraps that were the same thickness as mine to set the height and then through trial and error got the second setting. I used these snippets as templates for additional tweaking. Of course, you'll need to do additional testing for each thickness of wood you've finger-jointed. I totally agree with other reviewers. these instructions would be very helpful - the bit comes without it and is not entirely intuitive for the first time. Another important note: For strong connections it is important to set the stop so that it exactly matches the bearing of the bit. (This sets the depth of the seam and bringing the ends to a perfect connection of the knuckles ensures the seamless connection of the fingers). I had to make several attempts on my home-made router table. Another tip I only learned after watching a few finger bit setup videos is to stagger the blades, which reduces the stress on the bit since only a few teeth are in contact with the wood at a time. I would recommend this attachment if you need a tight tenon joint and want to join thick boards.
