A key point is missing from the photos and information: assemble so that the tab/tab is flush with the timing case. When installed with a gap between the KDP and the lug, the lug may rotate when the screw loosens, which may allow the KDP to come out, but is more likely to cause this lug to collide with the gear train! Might be worse than loosening the dowel pin. Still: avoid all the mess, install it right. I have attached photos.
