Review on ๐Ÿ’ง TICONN Waterproof Insulated Electrical Connectors by Tony Stennis

works but does not replace a proper solder joint

They work well enough but I wouldn't consider them a substitute for a proper solder joint. I used a heat gun with a small shrink tip and increased the temperature to around 480F to get adequate solder flow without melting through the tube. The resulting solder joint has wet the copper wire and seems safe. I removed the shrink tubing and cut the connection to see if it got soaked. In the attached photo, the left image is a standard solder joint and the right is a TICONN connection. You can clearly see that the TICONN solder didn't fully soak and wet many of the copper strands while the standard solder joint did everything, it's probably still a better connection than many crimped connections, but when a solid, secure connection is important it is probably better to just solder the old fashioned way.
