Converter Failed and Destroyed Transmitter

I purchased the 13.8 volt, 10 amp version of this converter to provide a constant voltage for a 2 watt transmitter (a Hamtronics 220mhz exciter). As the transmitter does not like the variability of DC voltages out of the solar charge controller, this seemed ideal. Sadly that was not the case.About two months after installation the converter failed as evidenced by the transmitter going off the air. The input voltage from the charge controller was still present, but the output from the converter was around 6vdc. Upon checking the transmitter, the final output transistor was found to be bad. My conclusion after some doing some further examination, is that the converter failed (for unknown reasons) and a power surge damaged the final transistor (an expensive and time consuming repair as they are not made any more).I made this purchase believing that the stated features include "Over-current /Over-load /Low-load /Short-circuit /Over-heat intelligent protection." If these "features" actually exist, then the only logical conclusion is that the converter failed and consequently damaged the transmitter.

Pros
  • 5.91 x 5.12 x 1.97 inches
Cons
  • Limited compatibility with some types of solar panels and generators
