Review on ๐ŸŒฒ Varathane 215214 Dark Walnut Wood Filler, 3.5 fl.oz by Jose Wititsuwannakul

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Ideal for small, relatively unobtrusive areas.

The name says it all. I have used this product on oak floors with a dark walnut finish and it does a great job on small imperfections. My floor has a few very minor issues here, but there are also a few areas that (d) need more filler - which this product isn't good for if you don't have a lot of time. and patience to improve your patch work. A couple of my 4" planks in particular have depths/cracks in the grain of the wood - to the point where it creates a rough surface that I noticed my socks snagging on. Concerned that leaving these areas as is would inevitably lead to cracks and/or further damage, I attempted to repair them with this product. The darker/grainier area of the wood plank is easy to maintain. The second was a relative disaster as it was also a large defect and I attempted to fill/patch the entire area to level it with the surrounding floor with the result was an ugly, clearly patched area that was e ja even after sanding and using my pencil to paint the floor. So I got creative and used a letter opener to paint the patched area like the surrounding patterns on the board/floor. I also used a different color of varnish to change the color to better match the highlights on the floor as the dark walnut created a "dark only" stain. To be clear I no longer have the smooth finish I wanted as I pierced the patch in several places - from the edge inwards - to the original wood. BUT the result is MUCH better and blends in better with the surrounding soil. Another tip I can suggest is to mask off the area you want to touch up with masking tape so a light sanding of the touched up area doesn't ruin the finish. the surrounding ground. You will inevitably have to remove the tape to get the smoothest possible surface, but you can protect the surrounding treated areas very easily (as much as possible on the patched area, not the surrounding floor). OVERALL: Works well for small, highly visible areas of the floor, but not suitable for large, highly visible areas. If you decide to try it on larger areas, be prepared to do a lot of extra work to match and blend the patched area with the rest of your floor.

Pros
  • This is amazing
Cons
  • Definitely a bad product
