I've just ordered two of these for family members - I've had mine for over four years with great performance and no problems. I live in a tornado prone area and unfortunately I'm too far from the warning sirens to hear them. Therefore, a reliable weather radio that loudly signals the weather is a must for me. I've tried several different models over the years and the Reecom R-1650 is the best I've owned. It has very good reception which is often a problem where I live as I am close to several cell towers which causes a lot of radios to fail. Not only is the weather report received clearly, AM and FM stations are not drowned out by neighboring towers either. This unit has the SAME decoding that allows you to limit the alarms to just those for your location - a huge plus over some of the older units that would turn on in the middle of the night for events 50 miles from my location. Even better, you can enter multiple SAME location codes instead of just one. Living on the border of two counties, being able to enter the SAME code for both was a must. You can extensively customize which alerts it responds to and which it ignores. This allows you to turn off features like Severe Thunderstorm Watch so you don't get woken up in the middle of the night. The volume of the alarm clock and the radio is controlled independently over a wide range from very quiet to quite loud. The *BIG* plus of this device is that it detects the end of message (EOM) tone at the end of alerts. This allows the radio to return to standby at the end of the alert, rather than forcing you to turn it off manually or (on models so equipped) wait for a fixed timer to expire. This is a huge benefit when an alarm is playing in the middle of the night - you don't have to get up to turn off the radio when the alarm is over. Another plus of this device is that it recognizes an extended set of alert codes, often referred to as All Hazards, so you can be alerted not only to weather-related emergencies but other types of emergencies as well.
