Review on 🎿 Rhino Rack Ski Carrier: The Essential Gear for Hassle-free & Safe Ski Transportation by Corey Burgess

Difficult to jam when loading

I've been using Rhino Rack on my 2017 Explorer Sport for about 3 years. While installation was easy, loading and unloading was very difficult as the locking mechanism is under direct pressure from the latches when loading. When empty, the lock cylinder can rotate smoothly around the bolt, but of course under any load the clamps move apart a little, causing the bolt to occupy the same spot where the lock cylinder normally rotates. The problem is compounded by the fact that the small key is the primary mechanical means of turning the lock, making it very difficult to get enough fingers on the key in cold, wet weather. Our solution was to have a second person squeeze the lock. Clips to relieve pressure on the lock barrel so it can rotate around the latch, but it's a bit ridiculous that the mechanism was designed that way. If the lock's rotary cylinder was connected to the handle, rather than just relying on a tiny key, it would be much easier to operate the lock and set the boards/skis/cleats in place. If I could buy another rack I would probably look for Thule or Yakima roof racks, not really a fan of this design.
