This heater is compact compared to an adjustable heater. When heating up, it only turns on for a few minutes so that nothing burns through. The sizing is not correct at all. Update: The heater was installed within 3 days and the temperature of my aquarium went up 1 degree to 75 F. Back. This 200 watt heater replaced one of my failed 100 watt Tetra heaters. For four days another working 100w tetra was struggling to keep my temp at 74 so I bought this 200w tetra to get the temp up. The water temperature never deviates too far from the target temperature of 78-80f. The advice I could give to any newbie considering buying them is this: 1. I have a few of these from 50w to 200w. My only complaint is that they keep the water at 77 instead of 78 (tested with multiple thermometers and controller probes). Bought 6 last month: 3 x 200w and 3 x 50w. The 50 watts were for 10 gallon tanks, they advertise that they can heat tanks up to 20 gallons. The 50w barely kept the tank at 73 degrees let alone the 78 it should be at. The red LED came on for less than 1 minute and then went off like it never got hot. I bought two of these units to heat my reef aquarium. I don't have enough heater power, so if one of them fails, it won't overheat my system. I've consistently noticed over the past week that one runs a little more than the other which means the temperature calibration could be a BIT wrong as both tend to shut down at a few minute intervals.
