They are built into a flexible (silicone) base that can be raised or lowered. In the upper mode, the bristles are exposed to form a simple brush. I bought this little folding brush for my 4 year old girl to put in her soccer bag before training. It's so cute and fits your hand perfectly. The pattern is colorful and charming. It also has a mirror which is a big hit. It doesn't close completely when you try to add hair ties or whatever. Included were 3 pink hair ties and a beautiful pink comb with wide teeth. This travel mirror brush set is ideal for young girls but not too young. The set looks good, but it doesn't feel remotely professional. It's light, bright and cheerful. A mirror and 3 hair scrunchies with rings are in a cute box with a tag, and outside of that box is a giant pink hairbrush, and it's all together in another big untagged white box.
