I use a 2000 grit Shapton to grip the edge of a plane or chisel blade and then stroke a few times with a 5000 or 8000 grit. Cuts fast and leaves a mark a very clean finish. great stone

I use it every month to keep my kitchen knives in perfect condition. Being able to pull it out and sharpen it right away (without having to wait for the stone to soak) is very handy, as I often decide during the cooking process that the knife needs touching up.

While I have no experience with other brands of stones (having just bought my first set of Atoma and Shapton stones), I recommend buying Shapton brand stones. They worked great in combination with Atoma diamond inserts. My chisels are deadly sharp now thanks to these stones and my new sharpening.
