Very Poor Quality: Painted

Not the quality I expect from Daniel Smith. The travel box is awful, can't believe it was designed by someone who knows watercolor painting. Pots and paint fell out of the travel box when opened. The colors are very dry, looks like they've been there for years.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Damaged

Great color bad packaging

Good quality colors but bad travel packaging. The lid does not open flat for mixing, and there is no ridge on the back of the mixing area to prevent paint leakage. It comes with an extra box and empty pots, which will come in handy, but the case is not suitable as a travel case.

Pros
  • This is great
Cons
  • There are problems

Buy Ruins Pallet Case

I am sure the colors are of excellent quality. Daniel Smith is one of my favorite brands. Unfortunately, real pallet cases are ridiculously poor in design and quality. None of mine opened without a great deal of effort, and when I managed to open the one with the paints most fell right out of the pot halves. To return. I'll pour myself into a decent palette.

Pros
  • Large selection
Cons
  • Only available in white

Gorgeous colors in a terrible case

I love Daniel Smith's soft and rich colors and this Ultimate Mixing Set is a wonderful collection. But as a field case, the plastic case has a terrible design. Bowl/lid does not open flat, has no dividers and no protrusion on the hinge side. So at the end of a fun plein air painting session, you fold up a suitcase that allows paint to run down your hand, up your hand, and onto anything nearby. These colors are expensive. Why can't this company provide us with a case design that fits the…

  • Hands free

Compact but not travel ready, the cheapest high price pigment choice.

The color choices for this set were handpicked by artist Jane Blundell. If you are a fan of hers and love her mixing charts/book then this set is made for you. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a universal set of "perfect blending" for all artists, especially if you like bright and unique colors. Too many shades of brown for graphic design/non-photorealism. The price of this set is damn high as it is filled with the cheapest pigments. To put this in perspective, each cup will cost you at…

  • Ideal for a small home

Quality Paint on Paint

Daniel Smith paints key selling point is their belief that each pot repeatedly goes through rigorous quality control and is only inspected when it meets their exacting standards for both volume and density, regardless of its final form. . I love the quality of their colors. They are rich in color and blend beautifully. However. The color of quinacridone gold barely covered the bottom of the pot. This little set costs about 68.97 plus tax. It was expensive for a beginner. With that being said…

Pros
  • Made in the USA
Cons
  • Long Lead Time

Good paint set, not so good palette

Daniel Smith's color and shade choices for the Ultimate Mixing Set are great. However, as many have noted, the box is very poorly framed. It seems intended only to hold color, no built-in palette. Practical functions are completely missing. I don't know what the DS development team was thinking. Fortunately, there are workarounds. In my case I used an extra set of 12 Koi colors that I had. The lid of the DS box can be removed in no time at all. The thin koi color bowl is glued to the box with…

Good colors, with terrible DS customer service!

Updated review. REDUCED the rating of this purchase from 4 to 1. While I am happy with the paints themselves the fact is that out of 15 pots only 5 were filled to the top with paint. Others were dented or had large air bubbles in them. Wrote twice to DC, no reply. Also, I paid $62 + tax for my set. Shortly thereafter, the item's price dropped to $51. Shouldn't DS or Revain give me $11 back!? DS support completely ignores customers! Previous review: Fantastic watercolors! This little set became…

Pros
  • You can fill the 15 empty halves supplied with other DANIEL SMITH watercolors (don't forget to label the cuvettes) and store them in the plastic travel case!
