Description of Dorman 917-377 Oil Dipstick for Engine

Clear marks on the rod promise easy-to-read oil levels. O-ring seals the top of the dipstick, prohibiting contaminants from escaping into the engine oil bay. Application-specific direct replacement for proper fit. Brightly-colored handle makes the dipstick easy to locate under the hood. Original Equipment (OE) Number: 12610053.

Not for Chevy 6.0 for engines and engine parts

Not for Chevy 6.0. It enters 3/4 into a new pipe for 2 tons and stops. It only bends at the tip of the tube. I've tried many different ways. I had to use the old one, thicker and reinforced in the middle.

Not suitable for your 6.0 engine

I tried it despite all the bad reviews because it was very affordable, NOT WORTH IT. This dipstick promised to fit my 2005 Hummer but didn't, and it's incredibly thin. Save your time and don't buy this dipstick.

it just doesn't work, it also fits with the new Dorman dipstick tube!

New pipe installed when I was making manifolds. The dipstick is so thin that it is difficult to get past the bends to the block. At this point it doesn't go any further, it just bends. 2002 6.0 2500hd I bought a bunch of Dorman stuff, to be honest the first useless part of it.

Pros
  • Handy item
Cons
  • No power

Does not fit best in dipsticks and hoses

Purchased for a 2003 Chevy Avalanche 5.3L engine which should be compatible. The dipstick only goes about ¾ in. I've tried using it at different angles but to no avail. The stick itself is a bit thin compared to the original, and the original stick has a riveted or welded break about halfway through, but this one doesn't. Can it be that the rod bends properly when inserted? I contacted the manufacturer to see what they had to say about it. I will update the review when they reply.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Communicate with seller

Very thin, not recommended.

Not a fan of this dipstick. First, it didn't work right away on my 5.3 LS engine. I had to twist the tip to get through the bends in the dipstick tube. The probe itself is very thin and bends easily. This forced me, as a last resort, to replace the damaged OEM stick that came with my newly purchased used truck. I ended up buying the factory direct from my local GM dealer for about $5 more than the aftermarket version. Do yourself a favor and buy it once from the retailer.

Pros
  • Lots of positive emotions
Cons
  • old

Many Dorman items are great product replacements, but they are not. If you need a new dipstick, contact the OEM. If you look at the difference between the OEM part number 12610053 and this one. At the OEM, the last 10 inches or so is thinner and more flexible metal. This one gets stuck and bends which is probably another reason it gets stuck, the probes shouldn't bend all the time, bottom line it doesn't slip past the last bend in the pipe. Wrestled with this and the dipstick tube for an hour…

Pros
  • Pleasant to use
Cons
  • Reliability
