Installed on 1TB WD SN850 in PS5

NVMe and related heatsinks are hard to find after Sony released their latest beta software for PS5. Make sure the heatsink you want to buy meets Sony's specifications. This one does. The kit contains two strips of thermal pads with a thickness of 0.1 mm and 0.5 mm. This is where I ran into my only setup problem. Using a 0.5mm thick spacer on both sides makes mounting the mounting clips impossible. If using thinner thermal pads is an issue for you, look elsewhere. Other than that, this heatsink…

Fixed Samsung 970 Evo Plus throttling issue

The controller on my 970 Evo Plus NVME drive (directly below the overclocked RTX 3080) got very hot. The controller frequently exceeded 70 C on mixed GPU and read/write intensive tasks. Unfortunately I lost the heatsink that came with my motherboard. Low enough to fit under the GPU without touching it, this heatsink kept the controller cool during these workloads. Most users probably won't need something like this, and I imagine the heatsink that came with my motherboard would have worked just…

Win. Great optics, cooler temperatures. What more can you ask for?

OK, but it won't make your M.2 drive faster or have more space. Those are really the only things one could ask for. BUT, that little heatsink is pretty cool - haha, got it?! Although really. It looks very nice inside the case and cools my M.2 Samsung 950 Pro by about 10-12 degrees on average. I wasn't too concerned about temps in the mid to high 40's, but temps in the mid 30's are better :) Installation was easy enough. Power off the device, remove the M.2 drive, cut the thermal pads to length,

Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly

I have one of the first motherboards to support M.2 NVMe SSDs, Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 3 rev. 1.0 On this board, the primary M.2 slot is next to the first PCIe slot and does not contain an M.2 heatsink. This means my Samsung 970 Evo Plus just lays bare under my graphics card, not exactly the right place to cool. At full synthetic load (the first two screenshots) without a heatsink, the flash memory itself heats up to 65 °C, and the controller to 83 °C. When the heatsink is installed according…

Small temperature difference; Works fine but I was hoping for more

I have purchased several crypto mining gaming desktops and they all came with Western Digital (WD) Blue 500GB NVMe drives except one with 240GB SSD. I replaced them with either a Samsung 970 EVO NVMe or a WD Black NVMe, all 1TB. I immediately noticed that all 1TB drives ran significantly hotter, averaging 50-53C. I wouldn't worry, except after installing HD Sentinel when the NVMe drives hit 45, the color changed to yellow and then to critical red once they hit 50. While many technical articles…
