Do not buy. Extremely loud.

Downgraded to one star for increased noise levels. Extremely loud. I'll replace it in just a week. Usually the Fluval brand matches the quality, but this filter is loud as hell. Lots of power but loud vibration that sounds like it's falling apart and won't stop. strong current, excellent filtration. All in all a great filter, but please Fluval redesign this filter to be quieter. I'm replacing it after just a week due to the unforgiving noise. This comes in the box as an emergency backup.

Pros
  • Ideal for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Out of style

really rumbles at less than 75% flow

So I liked that I could use my own media. I liked that I could change the flow and that the regulator was just a valve on a stem. I didn't like that it's really quite big for my 10 gallons. I didn't like that, below about 75% it rattles horribly and gets worse the lower you set it. At full throttle it blows my plants and fish everywhere. At low levels, the audio flows correctly but sounds like pebbles in a can. So I tried turning the flow against the glass by turning it higher. Not an idealโ€ฆ

Fluval, I trusted you!

I knew the price was too high to be true but Fluval has never let me down so I bought this unit. It was very strong and noisy. After observing the stress of my badis for a week, I tried to modify them by taking them apart and turning off the power by adding pre-filter sponges to the outlet (to dissipate power. It was noisier back then (my fault because I I ended up throwing it away and opting for a sponge filter from Aquarium Co-op. At $8 it was a bargain and everyone was much happier. Fluvalโ€ฆ

Good filter for the price with some flaws

Pros: Good atomizer, adjustable flow direction, smooth flow, perfect size for nano tanks, plenty of space for media selection, good price, easy to clean. Disadvantages: water changes cause a lot of inconveniences. After a water change, you need to disassemble and reassemble it to remove any air bubbles. If you don't do this, the engine will squeak and vibrate, make a lot of noise and likely shorten its life. If you pick it up underwater again, the debris will be thrown back into the water. Itโ€ฆ

Best filter I've found for small aquariums

Any Betta owner knows that finding the right filter isn't easy. Sponge filters did not cope because the water stagnated and algae grew. The HOB filters were too strong even at the lowest settings. Most internal filters are noisy and have alarming suction power, otherwise the fish will get stuck behind them (Betta are big fans of getting wedged by any means). This filter has none of these problems. The current is perfect and makes for a nice little shower that keeps the water circulating without

Ideal for battle tanks.

I have this in a 7 gallon planted tank. I'm glad there wasn't any coal to throw away. I have settings for such filtering. The sponge inside is coarse enough to allow water to pass through for a long time and is enough for a good culture of bacteria. The flow control worries me a bit. I would have preferred the pump speed to be adjustable rather than the drain. I had to reduce it for my Betta and I don't know if keeping the pump under that load 24 hours a day, 7 days a week is a good idea. Justโ€ฆ

The great little filter has its use

I have three of these filters and I really like them. I have one for 5.5 gallons with a female rooster, 4 amano shrimp and 2 mystery snails. I have one in a 6 gallon Fluval Edge instead of the original HOB, it has a male swimming bantams. And I use one in addition to my Fluval C2 filter in my 10 gallon planting aquarium which has a female betta, 5 otocinclus, 4 pygmy char and 3 mystery snails. All three filters work well and I love the atomizer. However, this sprinkler has a tendency to breakโ€ฆ

Good filter with some flaws

I bought this filter for a 5 gallon tank to customize. I removed the large black bio-sponge and replaced it with a Seachem matrix. I placed a small bio-sponge on top of the matrix ("downstream") to catch any bacteria that might detach. This keeps the impeller clean longer. I also keep red cherry shrimp. To make these filter shrimp safe I cut a very thin Aquaclear sponge and stuffed it behind the air intake. This gives the added benefit of removing large particles. The filter keeps my waterโ€ฆ
