Description of Fowler Micrometer 52-253-0041 with Enhanced Measuring Graduation

Micrometer Screw Gauge: With flat anvil/spindle pair for general purpose measuring; microfine graduations and carbide-tipped measuring faces; 0.001" graduation and ± 0.001" accuracy for precise readings. Accurate Measurements: Anvil and spindle hardened and precision-ground with microlap finish on tips; 0.256" diameter of measuring faces, 0.00003" flatness, and 0.00008" parallelism on 3-4" micrometers for accurate measurements. Easy to Use: Quick, easy zero adjustment on the sleeve and positive lever locking clamp; friction thimble with ratchet stop applies constant force for repeatability between users. Satin Chrome Finish: Vernier scale with hammertone blue baked-enamel frame with heat-insulated frames; the finishing on the thimble and sleeve helps reduce rust and glare, while the lapped spindle thread provides smooth movement, extending product life. This is an import. for micrometers

is boring and not even very good. Note that the listing states that Fowler is a US company, not that the product is made in the US. The packaging says Made in China. This is the same imported microphone you can buy anywhere for 40% cheaper. Bought 2-3 inches. It seems accurate, but the spindle is so protruding that the ratchet won't turn it. Tried cleaning with solvent and compressed air, didn't help. It's good enough for my needs, but I feel cheated. Save money and buy imported instruments…

Pros
  • Impressive
Cons
  • Packaging

I have a couple of micrometers and Starrett test indicators. Starrett is clearly considered the best in the business, and with good reason. But these Fowler micrometers are as accurate and durable as the Starrett. The only minor gripe I have is that they don't have a tenth scale. But I don't think I've ever used this scale because I only estimate tenths of the main index. The average do-it-yourselfer doesn't need any detail anyway. Fowler has been around for a long time, making precision tools.

Pros
  • GOLS certified
Cons
  • Only available in black

The tool that you will discover is very useful!

For most of my adult life I have admired well-made calipers and micrometers like these. Finally I made an investment and I see no difference in quality between them and the super famous Starrett brand. There is a helpful, short and direct video on YouTube on how to calibrate this particular element and if you are not familiar with micrometers it is worth taking the time to watch. In any case, they're a real pleasure to use - and I've found that now that I can measure the thickness of materials…

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Requires socket
