Description of 🪑 Fulton Furniture Carpentry Construction: The Ultimate Extension Solution

Drilling with forstner bits to achieve a flat bottom hole or to start a deep hole turning project like on a larger vase or vessel is essentially impossible with a standard length forstner bit. To remedy this issue we have developed an extra long, heavy duty steel extension that allows you to secure a 3/8 inch shank forstner bit into the end collet. The forstner bit extension gives you additional 8-1/2 inches of reach to bore deeper into your projects. This will help you create larger diameter starter holes or help when you need to drill in just a little further than the standard bit length will allow. The extension can be used with forstner bits on drill presses, lathes with a drill chuck installed (drill chuck not included) or with a power drill. One of the most common uses for the forstner bit extension is for woodturners who need to bore out starter holes on larger vessels. However, the extension works exceptionally well for projects like salt shakers, pepper mills or even wood turned beverage mugs. Contractors use the extension when they need to bore deep holes for running cables or wires and they also use it for joining larger timbers. The forstner bit extender is made from solid, heavy duty machined steel. It is designed to be used with forstner bits only. The collet inside diameter is 3/8 inch. This tolerance is very tight and designed to accept forstner bits with shank sizes of 3/8 inch or slightly smaller. Please note that some forstner bit manufacturers produce bits that say 3/8 inch shank size when in fact they are not. If you measure your bit shank and it is 3/8 inch, your bit should fit once the set screws are loosened. The collet outside diameter is 25/32 inch without the set screws protruding outward. The reason this is important is that as we mentioned earlier, some bits may have slightly different shank sizes. This means the set screws may protrude outwardly from the collet. The minimum size hole this extension will allow you to drill is 13/16 inch. Forstner bits and Machinery shown in pictures are NOT included.

Ideal for 3/8 Forstner Bits and Shoulder Bits

This is a really strong piece of steel that will not bend under pressure. Most Forstner bits are located at the bottom of the hole and are held in place with both set screws. Many 3/8 step drill bits only go deep enough for the first set screw, but when the bit has a single flat surface, a touch of blue threadlocker works well for me. The minimum practical diameter of any type of bit is 7/8" if the depth goes beyond the first set screw. The head of the extension itself is 3/4" in diameter and…

Pros
  • Collet OD is 25/32" with no protruding set screws. The reason for this is that, as mentioned, some bits can have slightly different shank sizes. This means that the set screws can protrude from the collet. The minimum hole size this extension will drill is 13/16 inch. The Forstner bits and hardware shown in the photos are NOT included.
Cons
  • Damaged

Forstner bits will not fit

I have a stash of 3/8" shank Forstner bits from several different brands including Porter Cable, Steelx and a few others. None of them match this extension from the pack. It works, but it was just unusable. I was bored out a bit more to make it work for my project, which wasn't an easy task as this tool is made of hardened steel. After modification it worked as intended Diameter that fits this holder but I don't have one. The smallest shank in my collection measured with a micrometer is .373…

Pros
  • The Forstner bit extension gives you an extra 8-1/2 inches of reach to drill deeper into your projects. This will help you create larger diameter starting holes or when you need to drill a little further than the standard drill length will allow. The extension can be used with Forstner bits on drill presses, lathes with a drill chuck installed (drill chuck not included), or with an electric drill.

The bit extension meets my expectations and serves its purpose.

It's solid. You can tell "That it's well built when you first pick it up. The screws hold the bit very securely. I've found this to be true even if only one of the two screws is used, but I recommend when always possible to use both. As they say on Revain. All 3/8" bits are not equal. I had three: one didn't fit at all, another only fitted deep enough to reach one of the screw holes (which was enough), the third fitted perfectly where both screws could be used to attach the bit. My suggestion…

Pros
  • Drilling with Forstner bits to drill a flat bottomed hole or to start a deep hole turning project e.g. B. on a large vase or vessel, is almost impossible with a standard-length Forstner bit. To address this issue, we've designed an extra-long, heavy-duty steel extension to hold a 3/8" shank Forstner bit in a collet.
Cons
  • So far so good
