I love the way this pump works to vacuum gravel. It makes cleaning my aquarium much easier. I don't usually use the filters that come with it to improve suction. It doesn't pick up enough gravel to soak it up, so it works pretty well. The pumping mechanism works well and it usually takes about 5-10 quick pumps for the siphoning to work. Worked just right for my 20 gallon (tall) tank and I can just keep my hands out of the water. I wish the hose was a bit longer and there was some sort of clip I could use to attach it to a bucket of water, but other than that it's sturdy and fast. Even with the clip I couldn't finish vacuuming the gravel, but I know I shouldn't be vacuuming all the gravel at once anyway. Updated 12/22/17 Ok I have to say this works very well. And my fears about the quality were wrong. I've been using it regularly for a few months and it works great. The hand pump to start the flow is easy to use and not too fast to pump all my sand from the bottom of my tank although it takes a bit but that's what you get with sand. If the sucking part was longer, maybe it wouldn't suck so much sand. I've upped the rating to 1 star because the quality is way better than I initially thought, but

I confess, I haven't bought an aquarium vacuum for over a decade. The only reason I bought it now is because my old trusty siphon cleaner died after 15 years of regular use.
