This product is junk. It's broken right out of the box and won't connect to a device to set it up. Absolutely useless. Their support documentation on their website is terrible and doesn't provide any connection troubleshooting whatsoever. Of course I get my money back. But I cannot replace the time I spent trying to understand this completely useless product. DO NOT BUY. you have been warned Doesn't connect to any device. Edit: To take my time, I contacted their tech support to help themโ€ฆ

Absolutely wonderful!

What a great tool! If you're reading reviews here, chances are you've already done some research to understand what this device has to offer for your workflow. The backup function alone is worth the money, not to mention the advanced file management on "any" SSD that is connected during editing. After seeing LumaFusion and the benefits of iPadOS13 for a base 7th Gen device, I settled on the 256GB version and added a 1TB Samsung T7 SSD as a companion. Now I find it easier to edit ProRes files on

Olympus raw files are not supported

Worked fine when I first got it and was using an Olympus EM1 mkII but I've updated it to an Olympus EM1X. Gnarbox does not support Olympus EM1X raw files. One of the reasons for the purchase was a partnership with Photo Mechanic which I have used for many years and which supports all my cameras. But for some reason Gnarbox doesn't support any of the new Olympus cameras. So now my Gnarbox is just an expensive external drive.

Update this rating

Original rating (one star): Did not load initially. It only hangs when the progress bar takes up about 3/4 of the screen. Updated Review: After initial frustration with this not working, I was finally able to get it to boot. I took it on a trip and used it to back up SD cards at the end of each day. Used the app to select, rate and add keywords to images. I imported some photos into Lightroom on my phone for editing. Overall it works as expected. My only complaint right now is that I wish I had

Gnarbox 2.0 SSD is what I was hoping for!

I've wanted this for a long time and it fulfills everything I expected and hoped for. I have a WD Wireless Passport SSD and where it's missing it puts a screen on it. It's slow, the app is so basic that there aren't many features after it. This is a game changer and you might think WD would respond with a better product or stop making backup devices for photographers or videographers.

Pros
  • Quick change
Cons
  • Negative impression

My copy was a paperweight

I rarely leave bad reviews because I understand that companies and the people who work for them do their best to meet consumer needs. I have invested in the 512GB version of the GNARBOX 2.0 along with an extra card reader and USB-C dongle to connect to my computer while waiting for a trip. I didn't want to carry my laptop. After receiving my device, I fully charged the battery to 100% and booted it up. So far, so good. Followed all setup instructions (particularly from their website). Afterโ€ฆ
