We followed the directions and while it didn't have a pungent odor and didn't remove the finish like you would expect from this type of product, it did seem to take the shine off the finish. I bought this because I was repairing a piece of furniture that had too many gaps that would take too long if I tried to sand it by hand. It did an excellent job of removing the glaze/seal from the piece. I was able to apply the new stain well. This will NOT remove the paint like sanding, it just prepares the surface for the stain or paint to stick.
