L.E.G.O. Creator Emerald Night Train Review

I remember getting this set as a Christmas present when I was 8 years old. My parents also bought a matching set of Power Functions. I spent all of Christmas morning and afternoon working on this amazing LEGO creation. It was fun to build, fun to play and fun to own. I say that because this is the only LEGO set I've built that I've never broken down into pieces in my 14 years of life. Buy, enjoy.

Our 6.5 year old son insisted on this from Santa this year. He really liked it and is playing with it on the Lego track we bought. We did not get the motors for this and they are not included. Maybe we'll switch to an engine, but now he's fine without it. He could assemble most of the engine and almost the entire coal truck and bus himself. So, I think if you're buying this for a "Lego-savvy" kid, you might go under the age listed on the box.

The details of the train are amazing. Lego has come a long way since I was a kid. My son (9) saw this and asked about it for Christmas. He worked diligently on it for several days. Now he's begging for the engine, gearbox and chain so we can get it running. The only issue we had was the train fell off the shelf and a piece broke off. This train. Oh man. If you have a young child who is both into Lego and trains, you could be in trouble. It has a lot of detail and is fun to build but might be too complex for say a 5 year old without much adult supervision and help. Then a year after you first got it when a long time ago it was taken apart and all the pieces were thrown into a box with other Legos and your kid says he wants to put it back together and you dig up the original instructions.
