Good upgrade for a long screwdriver

Terrible noise when crossing. Hm. Looks like a water pump. But the power steering pump is down there too. Wait, it could be the generator. No. I'll listen again later. Hm. Maybe finally get the stethoscope. A week later... Wow! It's definitely a water pump. Now there is no more doubt. Convinced me to order a water pump and fix the problem.

Pros
  • High marks for grip and durability from testers
Cons
  • No automatic

mine works fine No missing parts

Not sure what all the negative reviews are about. Mine didn't come in a torn box, broken or missing parts. Both headphones work for me. I've seen some outrageous negative reviews. But mine was fine. As I stood in front of the car with a stethoscope, my wife started the truck and you can hear it getting louder as the engine is running. And all the little noises. For less than $20 this is a good buy. would recommend.

Pros
  • Excellent construction
Cons
  • Minor issues

It is the most important diagnostic tool. Don't bother with electronics.

I've always had mechanical stethoscopes, but I wanted something better. I looked at an electronic one and then saw this one from OTC which I always trust. This is fantastic. MUCH better than any others I've had. The sensor I use the most uses some sort of "plate" technology that really amplifies the sounds. I've already bought another one as a gift. If it came in a case even at twice the price it would still be great.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Ugly packaging

Works as expected

This stuff works great! However, it weighs a little on the ears. I manipulated it a bit to ease the tightness in my ears. I wish the headphones were made of softer material. It does what it's supposed to do, namely amplify the sound. And it's getting stronger! It can be very noisy depending on what you are touching. But it's a job and she does it well. I wish I had had it a year ago. Far superior to a screwdriver and safer to use, especially in hard-to-reach places. Definitely recommend…

Stop using a long screwdriver

If you still use screwdrivers etc to hear noise, do yourself a favor and get one. Very sensitive so be careful at first until you get used to where you bump it. The funnel adapter is by far the best part of this kit. I've used it several times to find vacuum leaks, squeaks and squeaks. The old piece of tubing will work, but it's much more sensitive, so you'll have a better chance of detecting the noise. For the price it's crazy not to have it. Worth every dollar on first use. We strongly…

Irreplaceable item for self-diagnosis

I noticed a noise in the area of the V-ribbed belt on my old BMW 5 Series. I tried one of these to see if I can identify what needs attention. (I own an old BMW with the expectation that I'll do most if not all of the maintenance and repairs myself, but I'm hardly a master mechanic.) Tools separate amateurs from professionals.” I wasn't sure how I knew I was wondering if I had successfully detected the sound, but as I poked around I heard a buzzing noise in my headphones and still noticed the…

Play doctor with your car!

I've had a knock under the hood of my 2003 ML350 for several months. It was driving me insane because I couldn't pinpoint exactly where it was coming from. is it an engine power steering pump? Sometimes it's hard to tell because the sounds bounce off the engine bay. A friend on a forum suggested I buy this mechanical stethoscope and honestly I thought it was the dumbest thing I've ever seen! But I ordered it anyway, and what do you know?! I could focus on the problem. My air conditioning…

The best you can get. Lisle Stethoscope 5 STARS

Guys I've been doing car repairs in retirement for 40 years and can honestly say this is the best stethoscope money can buy. I have used many brands over the years but this is the best. Amplifies sound 50 times more than any other stethoscope in my opinion. One of my injectors was making more noise than the others. When I touched the dipstick on the injectors, it was easy to find the noisy one. Be careful when using, you don't want to bang the probe on objects as the sound will be intense. The…

fixed my headache - Tools & Equipment

I recently went through my fully assembled d16y8 engine. I knew I got it right this time because every time the shop rebuilds my stuff, they just mix new parts with old, worn parts, and sooner or later the engine will fail. I was so tired of wasting money in stores that I went ahead, put my stuff together, took my time and it worked. The problem was I had this awkward metal grind/clatter of metal, like a grinder gently tapping a piece of metal, and it didn't sound good at all, I've never heard…
