I have been working as an electrician for 40 years. This is my choice as it has the best qualities for quality work. I use an impact wrench to screw the plastic holes in and out a few times to loosen them, then drive them into the wood. Easy to set up. Never breaks.

Ideal for adding an outlet to an existing wall

This is ideal for adding an outlet to an existing wall. I've added other brands of retro boxes in the past and they've never felt so solid just attached to the drywall. This one is awesome and very durable as it uses 2 screws in the stud. And it's deep enough to easily fit in a GFCI outlet. Definitely recommended.

Good repair solution

Great idea. Have used a lot of these so far. Always keep a few in the truck. The only problem so far is that it's difficult to keep them flush with the wall surface when screwing them in. You want to retract with screws. It helps if you start them further away from the wall cutout before screwing them in. So when they are tightened and pulled back, they are closer to the surface of the wall.

Not as good as I hoped

Tried this existing work box and another as I needed to install two drawers in my house. The other box was much easier to install and was much more durable (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DPV5ZA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) For some reason this box wanted to move when I tried to attach it to the hairpin. After it was secured, it seemed to move a lot despite being pressed firmly against the hairpin. I'm also not a fan of the kind of knockout this box has.

Good but could be better

They have mounting screws as opposed to the nails on the blue plastic boxes. They screw in from the inside of the box and offer more flexibility when mounting. There is a certain volume loss due to the screw bosses. Some mounting screw tabs may interfere with cable insertion. The first step is to remove the original screws (Phillipsยฎ type) and replace them with Torxยฎ screws. In some cases it is easier to insert the wires before assembling the box. Don't expect to pull the wires back out of theโ€ฆ

Best old work box

I like it very much. A few months ago we bought an old house that required a lot of electrical work including installing many outlets. I used to have an old house and absolutely hated most of the old work boxes. They always failed and felt like they would pop out of the wall every time you unplugged (and sometimes they did)! This is a dream. You cut a hole, insert the wiring, position it and screw it in. That's all. Once inserted it is securely attached to the stud and the PVC is very thick and

Solid product for junction boxes

I've been using these boxes for years. They are solid and intelligently built. They are easy to install in a new building or when modernizing. They hold NM cables securely, unlike most plastic boxes found in hardware stores. (It's a little difficult to adjust or pull out the cables if you make a mistake). Some cable slots are labeled #12 and others are labeled #14. It really helps (almost necessary) to pry apart the plastic tabs with a flathead screwdriver before inserting the cables. I used to

The quality is good, but not regulated.

Okay, I kept looking at the picture trying to figure out how these things are adjustable in depth. I never got to figure it out before ordering so I just ordered 6 individual gangs and a 3 gang as it seemed like the only one that would work with my existing build. As soon as I got them I realized that calling them adjustable is the same as calling a 2x4 board adjustable since you can put screws anywhere. Serious? I was working with drywall and quickly found that if I leveled it as close asโ€ฆ

Neat aftermarket alternative (vs grand piano design)

Compared to modified grand piano box. Advantages of WING: easy to install (anywhere, no bolt required), easy to install (cut a hole, insert into the wall, turn the screws to open and press the wings against the wall). Slightly cheaper / wide availability. Cons: Fragile, may feel like attached items are bending; Depending on the spacing between the studs and the quality of the wall, there may be sagging (or, if you're clumsy), cracking in the wall area. Be careful with steps like breaking offโ€ฆ
