Required to align the cutter/drill with the punch marks.

I've been using this for almost 9 months in a machine shop to align a cutter with die marks. I've dropped it multiple times and accidentally stuck it into the workpiece multiple times, but it continues to work.

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • Vulgarity

Essential Mechanic's Tool

If you own or plan to buy a router, you need an edge finder. With these tools, you can precisely locate the edge of a part or the center of a hole. You really save time. It's amazing that they work so well, but it's true. Treat it with care and it will last a lifetime. Great tool and highly recommended.

Pros
  • Durable Finish
Cons
  • Obsolete

Sometimes low tech is better.

Simple, well made and accurate. It can find the center of the hole or find the edge. And unlike LED-based edges, it works on metal or non-conductive plastic blanks. And because the tips are spring-loaded, it's much harder to bend them by accidentally turning the lead screw the wrong way. No battery is required either. Sometimes low tech is better.

Pros
  • GOLS certified
Cons
  • Modern

This is Mitutoyo: Milling Bits

I'm having trouble with pre-made options like durability as I just got them today and can't pinpoint durability. However, it looks like what you would expect from Mitutoyo. I bought to be able to center the wooden squares to make a chess board with holes to connect the individual squares together. I made a metal template to attach it to the bracket. This allows me to center the jig with the pattern set. Should work fine.

Pros
  • Easy Installation
Cons
  • Having troubles

Pretty good, but not great

When I'm working on a pro milling machine, I use a good edge finder to find my part to within a tenth (0.0001") and when I pull back a Tenths, the edge of the finder returns to a smooth cylinder With that I have to step back a few thousandths before it goes straight The accuracy of the initial pitch I think is ok but I'd really like to be able to confirm this by stepping back and seeing that it has strayed from detail. It's fine for my CNC router but I wouldn't use it with a precision machine.

Pros
  • Best
Cons
  • Ugly packaging

Pretty good Good for power tool parts and accessories

I like this model better than my school finder [unnamed brand] which doesn't have a center pointer. Also, I like it better than my B&S/Tesa which only has one small side and does NOT use the opposite side to use 0.5". there is a cap screw. The only issue with this item upon arrival was that it has a thin "edge" on the polished surfaces [pointers and level] facing the "viewfinder blade". This will obviously give the wrong mean value. but it was easy to polish with porcelain stone M/F

Pros
  • Got it!
Cons
  • Expensive

Simple, practical, accurate

This is one of those "how did I do without” gadgets. It is sanded well and appears to be precise and durable. I use it on a drill press to find holes that need to be positioned accurately. Place it in the chuck with the tip down, spin it at about 1000 RPM and use a small stick to gently push the tip edge until it clicks without hesitation. Turn off the engine. The dot is now squarely aligned with the center of your cartridge. Having drawn the transverse lines accurately on the workpiece, you…

Pros
  • Excellent performance

  • Doubtful
