Documentation sucks. It took me three days to figure it out. Here's what you need to know to trace an underground wire: a) DISCONNECT power to that wire. Buy one of these touch testers (lights up when the cable is live) to be 100% sure. Is Your Life Worth $26? b) Disconnect the black wire from the control box. c) Connect the red wire NF-816) Here's the first trick: Don't connect it to the neutral or ground wire in the switch box. Works if you know how the tool works. Need better guidance.

This is version 1.0 of the product and it has some bugs, so be prepared. The instruction manual is a poor translation and seems to have been written by someone who didn't understand the theory behind this device. However, it can certainly serve a purpose. I traced a 50 foot pipe buried about 14 inches deep to within a few inches. I used nylon rope to show the exact path. The trick is knowing which mode to use. Works as advertised

This unit received mixed reviews so I doubted it would work. The documentation isn't great, but after playing with it I can report that it did a great job of locating the sprinkler wires that were buried about 16 inches deep. After setting it up, it took me about 10 minutes to accurately locate over 200 feet of underground cable. I think some of the negative reviews are due to operator error, meaning they didn't understand how this device was supposed to work. I found that it actually works two
