Olde Thompson Caffe Pepper Shaker Review

I've had it for about 4 years. I am writing this review because there is a plastic part in the pepper mill that has failed after years of use. The pepper mill works without this part, but not as stable. This piece broke when I ground the peppers into chili. Who knows how much plastic ended up in the chili. I hope it's not poisonous.

I purchased this item 2 1/2 years ago and while I am satisfied with it for the most part I have to say I am a little dissatisfied with the grinder. At first I thought it was a good buy, but over time I became dissatisfied with the unstable pepper dosage. As I turned the mechanism, the pepper came out a little at first, then a lot, and then the adjustment changed from tight to loose. I found myself constantly changing attitudes. I am not satisfied with this item.

I needed a replacement for a Penzeys pepper mill that was poorly made and kept falling apart so it couldn't grind peppercorns. This pepper grinder is well designed and does a great job of grinding peppers. And this set was twice cheaper than Penzei's. The holes in this salt shaker are too small for coarse or flaky sea salt, but it's perfect for traditional iodized table salt. The grinder and shaker feel very comfortable and the set on the table looks polished. Very happy with this set!

Send a replacement set. ----- Less than 3 months later, the pepper grinder broke. I ate a little bit tonight. When I looked closely to see what was broken, I found that the wood was cracked as well. I had a 25 year old Olde Thompson set that I liked but the finish was starting to get sticky and I wanted to replace it. So far my only disappointment has been that the holes in the salt shaker are smaller and much larger than the old salt shaker and the salt seems to spill out quickly instead of having to 'shake' it out. I've been using this set long enough to say the pepper mill holds up well to everyday use, producing fine and coarse grinds. A pepper mill is an indispensable part of my kitchen, although I rarely use a salt shaker when cooking. Nice set but I smelled the same chemical smell. We let them air dry open for a few days but when the smell didn't change; My husband recommended putting salt in both to draw out any odors. I left the salt for a few days and then emptied it. The salt that came out smelled strongly of lacquer or something else that leaves that horrible smell. However, it still smells very strong. I wanted to buy a pepper mill with a comparable mechanism to Peugeot (if not better). I bought this and a Kyocera ceramic grinder to see which would compare to an old grinder that I had to throw away. To my knowledge, the Olde Thompson pepper mill is based on carbon steel. That means it's really tough, can take a beating, but has its Achilles' heel when it's wet.
