Plays Great But Won't Read DVD-R

This unit does a great job playing. I've never owned a DVD player/recorder and it works great with Panasonic store-bought DVDs or DVD-Rams. But as another reviewer mentioned, it doesn't read DVD-R. I've used a couple of Maxell DVD-Rs (don't know why the brand should matter) and the player says NO READ. You need to buy DVD-Ram discs, otherwise you can't burn anything. The instruction manual is a little confusing if you're not already familiar with the wiring and general setup. Burning a DVD is similar to burning a CD-R in a CD burner. You must finalize a DVD-R before it can be played on (most) other DVD players. If you don't, it will not play on any computer other than the DMR-E50K…

This recorder is not for everyone as it sometimes fails even with Panasonic drives. If the recording exceeds the first 111 seconds, it will normally continue, but don't count on it. When it reaches that magic moment, it sometimes explodes, which means the laser lens is dirty, the recorder doesn't like the quality of the disc, the power is too high, or it's the wrong day of the…
