My valves were closed so suction was intermittent.

Excellent for the money. When your valves are flat, they work best. Mine were hollow so they didn't last all that long, but I had some "twists" before they came loose and kept coming loose. I ended up wrapping a few turns of tape around the end of the valve stem and using a drill that wasn't too tight on the end of the valve and twisted it back and forth that way. I'm glad to have them in my tool collection.

Pros
  • Ideal for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Doubtful purchase for the elderly

I ended up using a completely different method that works well. This tool was a source of frustration and took a lot of time with very little results. poor compared to other "similar" tools, but I was very disappointed with how it worked. I was amazed to think that this was the style my grandfather used in the 1960's and people couldn't come up with a better style!

The perfect tool for the job!

Ideal valve lapping tools! Lapping the valves became a breeze. All the people complaining about them not working properly or not sticking just don't know what they're doing and maybe they should check out some more DIY YouTube videos. BY THE WAY. It really helps a lot if you use a wire brush to clean the porous carbon off the valves before attempting to attach a suction cup to them. It's just basic scientific knowledge. If you don't understand at least that, you shouldn't be near the engine atโ€ฆ

making it pop out very easily. After 3rd valve

This tool can be a chore, but for the price it's definitely worth a try. It doesn't hold the suction very well, especially when oil is allowed to get between the suction and the valve, making it pop out very easily. After the 3rd valve I kinda got used to it and figured out how to keep it longer. I dry both surfaces and wipe down the areas. I would work with the tool so that when I rotate it, it lasts longer. Yes, it hurts, but I'd rather feel it work and be lapped by hand than with a drillโ€ฆ

I know the poor handyman blames his tools.

.but I didn't touch those suction cups. Did you ever buy a bow and arrow with a suction cup or a suction cup arrow as a kid? Did they have lousy suction cups that wouldn't stick to anything? This thread reminded me of that. Anything on the surface of the valve and they fall off. You can see from the YouTube video that some people can use these things. I'm not one of them. And to be honest, having discovered the workaround, I don't know why anyone WILL want to use it. After working with this for

Doesn't take up much. The exhaust valve keeps popping off.

This lapping tool works well on large valves but not on smaller valves. A 20 minute job turned into a 2 hour job. I used this valve lapping tool on a Briggs and Stratton 16 HP single cylinder OHV lawn tractor engine. The large suction cup on the tool was too big to fit the exhaust valve (which is smaller than the fuel inlet valve) so I had to use the smaller end of the suction cup tool to lap the exhaust valve. It doesn't take up much at all. It kept coming from the valve and I kept having toโ€ฆ
