This fountain is not a very good product. I followed the care instructions and replaced the filter as instructed, but it still got slimy and my cat refused to use it. He went to Goodwill :(

Petmate makes a great fountain but their black model should be discontinued. Whether water is pure cannot be determined by its appearance. When I flushed this fountain, which I usually do every few weeks, purple slime grew near the pump and covered the carbon filter. I think the pump motor might be leaking (I'm not entirely sure).
