I've never had one like this, I just replaced the grooved discs with new ones every few years. After a while it adds up, with this device, with a little work, I can also smooth out worn wheels. Be sure to wear safety goggles as dust will fly up. A light touch works best when making multiple passes to get the desired result. Nice tool, only downside is the small short handle, I added a piece of 1/2" emt pipe and that fixed the problem. Works fine, just easier.

I was able to fill both coarse and fine grinding wheels with aluminum. I decided to put ten bucks on this weird little thing before looking for new wheels (or just living with the shoes). It worked like a champ. A few seconds and all dirt is gone. much more aggressive and dusty than silicon carbide rods.

Received today and before I start I put a few drops of hot glue on the nut and thread. Reading the reviews, people complained that it was loose. After that I went to my grinding wheels on a bench grinder and ran them over both wheels and the part worked fine. I recently bought some lawnmower blade sharpening stones that you use in your drill bit and came across one that I used and it removed that stone as well. I am very satisfied with this POWERTEC 71003 straightening tool.

My old grinding wheels needed adjustment. They were just racing tires. Mind you, I placed this tool lightly on the first wheel and it immediately began scraping years of debris off the wheel. I had several diamonds that stuck out much further than the rest which cut grooves in the grinding wheel. This is one of those products that you should probably buy locally, if at all, due to the lack of quality control. I don't know if other brands are better. To me they all look like they come from the same factory. In terms of durability, I have slightly sanded 3 grinding wheels so far.
