The ideal bit for mechanical and hand tools

Never used a Forstner bit. Brilliant. I had a brand new workbench that I made. Ash and walnut top 2 1/4" thick. 46 holes had to be drilled into the surface to be used as canine holes. This bit went through both woods like butter. Much better than the old paddle bits. Next purchase? A complete one Set of Forstner jets, but I throw away the paddle jets.

Pros
  • Forstner bits
Cons
  • Small bits

Good for end grain drilling

I use this forstner bit mounted in a tailstock chuck to drill center holes in small hardwood salt shakers. That works fine. The sides aren't as smooth as other bits I've had and one of the cutting edges works harder than the other, but so far there's no chatter and the sharpness is holding up. Not great but good enough. I don't see any advantage with the sprocket.

Pros
  • Power & Hand Tools
Cons
  • High Price

Better than Famag Bormax!

I am making dining room chairs and need to drill holes between the legs for the stretcher. I have an old Forstner from Grizzley and Freud and also bought this piece new from Famag Bormax. Since I'm making 3/4" holes and also need a new 1/2" bit, I thought I should compare the new bits to see if the Bormax is worth 2.5x what Freud cost Has. it definitely isn't! Forget Bormax and go to Freud! Remember I tested with a 12v Bosch hand drill instead of a drill press, but the Bormax worked just likeโ€ฆ
