Of course, black pepper will never get through the holes. Washing for the first time, before use I took the lids off and just put them in the dishwasher on the prongs of the top rack and hand washed the lids. I cannot judge how shakers work. I just received them today. One had been smashed - a large hole appeared to have been punched in the top of the glass. I didn't realize it until later, but when I opened the package, tiny bits of glass fell onto my clothes, furniture, and floor.
