Excellent Steel!: Knife Blades

I have used this steel from RMP several times and have not had any problems with any of my orders other than the bars having a slight warp. There is nothing problematic about that. The steel behaves the same as 1095. And it is always supplied fully annealed. I've never had a problem cutting bars.

Pros
  • Little competition
Cons
  • Damaged

The steel is hardened and appears to be in pretty good shape.

Sticks big enough to make several knives (practical maximum about four small ones per stick), made a couple of test knives for the heat treatment set, steel hardened and seems pretty good. to edit; I made a few attempts but I chose hardening of the steel, it seems good.

Pros
  • Sleek Design
Cons
  • Succinct Manual

Not glowed! - Knives, parts and accessories

Got 3 of 1095 and they are not annealed. Tested many times, but files, bits and blades slip on the surface. To use it I'd have to anneal myself, and I have no way of getting the temperature down properly for the long time it takes for 1095. Any attempt would affect the grain structure. Last time I used RMP

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • I vaguely remember

Not properly annealed?

I don't know how or why but it looks like the steel has hard spots. I use metal band to cut them for example, so it usually gets smooth, but then it stops cutting out of nowhere in random places, the blade goes dull, and that's it. I'm not sure if they didn't anneal properly or if I'm missing something. Went through the all new blade with a blank. Used 3 new blades and then threw them away. kind of shit

Pros
  • Hands free operation
Cons
  • Quality

Not Annealed Don't Buy

The three pieces I received were not annealed which makes them difficult to work with and it takes more work to actually anneal the steel for $35 you look go somewhere else when they fix the quality control after annealing it will be a decent material but as this has been an issue for some others I don't think they will. I was able to make knives with them by going through the annealing process, giving the product a second star

Pros
  • Durable Finish
Cons

Good for forging, don't expect perfect size and shape.

Just using them for the first time. The resulting parts weren't annealed, so the first thing I did was heat to a critical state, then air cool one, then ash cool the other, and I left one intact to show you the difference. I am working on a video and will post it soon. I got all 3 files out of the bag so I know they can definitely be amplified. Update photos and videos soon and they will soon be on ForgedFireandWater too.

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Not all fit

Not quite annealed (updated)

This material was nearly impossible to cut. I'm new to this so didn't get it, but after a bit of research (and having kinda destroyed those blanks trying to cut them) I understand a lot more now, and so does a lot of the reviews seem to do being here we say these blanks don't get annealed. Buyer Warning. It looks like some of them are, but I wouldn't risk it. Update: I started working on one of the bars last night and noticed that it is curved instead of straight.

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • Not sure
