Cloning an SSD or HDD

I don't usually write product reviews. Nevertheless, I found it important to write a review for this product. First, this product is unrivaled. If you are looking for a product that works as a standalone cloning device and can erase both SSD and HDD, look no further. This device does both very well. I had no problems with either function. For the most part, the included instructions aren't too hard to understand for those familiar with Windows.

Pros
  • Feels good
Cons
  • There are errors

An absolute piece of inefficient garbage

I bought this thing for its "erase" feature and it takes over ONE HOUR to erase a 500G drive. It's a damn shame. After erasing the drive, I tried to see how it looks after plugging it into my laptop, but my Windows 10 Pro PC doesn't recognize the drive. Actually I have 16 disks that need to be erased and I just happen to be able to see some drives and not others. The worst is when I erase the drive and the laptop doesn't recognize it anymore. Incredibly cheap quality. If I could give 0 stars Iโ€ฆ

Used successfully on IDE hard drives.

I wanted this for old IDE drives that I needed to read and erase before throwing them away. Before I bought this I didn't understand the difference between IDE and SATA and had to buy the adapter advertised with this product ("often bought together"). The package contains the cables needed to connect the IDE data pins and power pins to this docking station. Just keep in mind that the docking process is not at all what is shown in the images of this device or the adapter on this page in Azamomโ€ฆ

So cool I threw away my old dock

I bought this dock from StarTech because my old dock with no name couldn't handle SSDs. I've been using this dock for a variety of HDD and SSD tasks for a couple of weeks now, from basic disk access to cloning and erasing. He played great. As I write this review, I'm in the process of erasing an old 512GB SSD. I also purchased a StarTech SATA to 2.5" or 3.5" IDE Hard Drive Adapter for Hard Drive Docking Stations (SAT2IDEADP) here at Revain. Together, these two StarTech products allowed me toโ€ฆ

Slow but running - internal hard drives

I only bought this to clean up a batch of drives. It's incredibly slow. About 16 hours to erase a 4TB drive and that's just one pass. It would be faster to implement a native SATA secure erase function rather than a manual one-pass overwrite. Although incredibly slow, it works. A strange anomaly is that after the erase process is complete, you have to turn off the device before you can erase another set of drives. If you press the erase button on a new set of discs without turning them offโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Don't waste too much time
Cons
  • No instructions

Works great - hard drives get very hot! I use a small fan to keep the disks cool while cloning. To update. Unable to boot with 3 drives in dock with USB cable. All these same drives boot fine when connected to MBI with sata cable, tried USB 2 and USB 3.0. Connections on the computer I've experimented with CMOS boot priority but didn't go. The source drive is my everyday desktop drive and the target drive is a clone I made right on my computer about a month ago. These are WD10EZEX drives withโ€ฆ

Do yourself a favor and buy something else!

I don't know whether to call his company a joke or not because I'm not laughing. Whenever I build a machine or have my machine with everything I want, I take out the drive and make a clone in case the HDD fails, even on an SSD. I only made three clones on this piece of junk and it stopped reading one of the discs. I've spoken to their tech support twice, they don't have much knowledge, I guess not as much as is required for this equipment. They are based in London and Canada but are said toโ€ฆ
