Works Great!: Aquarium Test Kits

I was hesitant to buy because the reviews were very positive or not but the convenience of when it actually worked was too tempting. Both were installed in my healthy 40b tank over a month ago. I've confirmed with the API test kit and while the ammonia tests don't look for the same type of ammonia, I haven't found any positive results for either Seachem's or Alert's main test kit. API's pH values are very close, if not quite, to what I interpret as color on Seachem. Very happy with it, I can…

Watch out for salt/sea/cool water.

Navy/Navy/Reefer vessels please note. The ammonia meter is for salt water and the pH meter is for fresh water. I cannot explain if this pH meter will work with seawater as it is labeled for freshwater. My 9 year old noticed this after I put him in our new little saltwater nano tank. Glad she noticed. I pulled it out and let the kids experiment with lemon juice. now that might work just fine, but for those of us who have the right gear and don't want to waste money, just get the ammonia warning…

ph no, ammonia yes the best aquarium test kits

The pH unit changes about 1/2 day after a water change or adjustment, it returns to the yellow base point, physical tests show the true reading and leave it in place, a sudden change in point color can indicate a problem , not impressed at all. Ammonia appears to be accurate to the point that my physical tests don't refute what it says it will stay for the warning gauge. I have a pH in my main fresh water tank and will not replace it after use and the replacement point (included) has reached…

COOL instructions - I don't know if it fits or not

SeaChem instructions for this product begin with "Remove Protective Film". When the box is opened, the ONLY protective film on the pH sensor is the operating point. Having never purchased this product before, I scrape what I later learn is a working point. Second, I open the ammonia sensor and THEN find out what SeaChem means by "protective film". Without further explanation and trusting SeaChem's lousy instructions, I simply rendered the product useless. It is possible to write persuasive…

Good way to get a quick look at the key indicators

I personally don't rely on this for real water testing, but I use it as a quick indicator that can encourage me to do further testing and treatment if needed. Using it is very simple, just remember to remove the plastic so the dots are read correctly. One thing I don't like is that the pH levels tend to be a lighter orange color on either side of the spectrum, making them difficult to spot. if you are more or less if your reading is not straight 7.0. However, it has much clearer readings at the

Great offer; Great product

The Ammonia Alert is very helpful in teaching my daughter to change the water in her broiler house weekly for her fry and feed to avoid overfeeding. She just has to follow the color daily. And she sees that after a 50% water change, she's turning yellow again. Great tool for monitoring and learning. Warning: Using leaves, cones or wood for tannins in a shrimp tank will stain the pH disc and make color determination difficult. In tanks without the addition of tannins, it is very legible and…

Works as intended; easy to misunderstand

Before you claim it's inaccurate, examine total ammonia and free ammonia. They give different ammonia readings than strip or drip tests because they are total ammonia. If anything, they are more accurate because they only show free ammonia (ammonia that can harm fish). Just note that you are using an ammonia "reducer". This shows that the ammonia is gone, leading you to believe the problem is solved. Then the ammonia will "come back" right after Prime or whatever passes in a few days. I like to

Peace of Mind: Aquarium Test Kits

I use the PH and Ammonia Alarm Combo Pack in my 2 gallon quarantine tank and it was just right for me, I know this because I use it in combination with use API masterkit. I used them years ago and the price was right so I ordered them for peace of mind and for my lazy days. It's a lot easier than taking water and testing these things one at a time, waiting minutes waiting for test results from liquid tests and trying to figure out which color is which when one color looks almost identical to…
