good performance, silly design

Pros: -good picture, good photos/slow/search pictures, but ProScan was better, good recording, quiet operation, easy setup and timer recording. Cons: - Impossible to view the channel when adding/deleting channels! -screen goes gray between channel changes -automatic clock worked but doesn't show it's working because the VCR is off and there's no activity indicator -manual controls are lame -menus on Sony TVs can't be operated with the remote control

Excellent SONY machine

I have one of these machines. SONY has made some very good VCRs in the past. This is one of them. The SONY SLV-799HF HiFi VCR is an excellent and reliable VCR. This device takes very good pictures. Recorded tapes look great too. Even with SONY VCRs, I was really impressed with the playback quality of the EP recordings. Poor VCR tuner for UHF channels; Interference From Channel 4

The business VHF station I record every day has switched to a different, weaker VHF channel. I had to install a heavy-duty, commercial-grade Winegard outdoor antenna. After installation, this weak UHF channel was clear enough on my TV. However, my 6 year old GE 4 mono head unit was in very poor condition so I had to replace it.
