These are real wax candles with a subtle light that flickers realistically. Although the light is not enough. The smell will go away so don't expect it to last long. I use them for my sconces in my bedroom so I don't have to worry about real flames next to the wall. The timer feature is very cool. Just got these so can't speak to battery life but I have other Inglow candles and they last a long time and I really like that they use AA batteries instead the more expensive C and D batteries of other candle brands. I also find that they are lighter than other candle brands. Have 3 of these in honey and they are my favorites so far. They look the most realistic and not like the smooth plastic candles I have.
