I descale every three weeks (domestic use in urban areas with a total hardness of 5.53 grains/gallon). Espresso shots are noticeably tastier and more enjoyable immediately after descaling, and more consistent from shot to shot. Maybe every two weeks would be better. Conclusion: If you use your espresso machine in an area with minerals in the water, you need to descale it regularly.
