This type of thermometer is essential to the effective operation of Vermont Castings Defiant. It lists the factory recommended temperatures for dampening the catalyst system. It looks like it will last the life of the stove even though it costs a little more than others.

I tried three other brands (because they were cheaper) before settling on this one. All cheaper devices failed and quickly lost color. This one holds up great. It appears to be of the same quality as the one it replaces (which lasted over 20 years).

Magnet seems to keep it in place when loading firewood. I have a defiant wood stove and fitted a thermometer to the hatch. My only complaint is that the temperature is around 30 degrees Fahrenheit (I used a multimeter thermocouple for comparison). It doesn't matter if you know the offset.

So I tested it in my oven. It turned out that the temperature is 100 degrees higher than the temperature of the oven. So 700 degrees on my wood stove (Vermont Castings Encore) means 600 degrees.
