They allow you to spread your toes. Most shoes squeeze them all together. I use them for walking (jogging) and they are better than any shoe I've tried for barefoot/forefoot technique. They lack some upper structure, so they're not suitable for activities that involve turning or changing direction quickly (golf, basketball, tennis) as the shoe doesn't wrap your feet as they turn.
