Mounting surface Metal, everything else plastic. It seems cheap but hey you get what you pay for. They seem to be working fine. I've never had a situation where I've overloaded a circuit, so I can't say much about the accuracy of the current at which they trip.

There are many ways to protect an electrical circuit in a car and the simplest is a fuse. I like switches like this because they give you the ability to turn off the circuit when not in use, much like a switch. Current is supplied at one pole and disconnected at the other. It is so easy. Note that they're not all the same: this one is rated for 30 amp tripping, so you'll need to know what's in your circuit to choose your breaker size.

Instead of a fuse, I used an extra fuse box that I mounted on my Jeep. I used a Blue Sea fuse box and was impressed with the quality so got their circuit breaker too. Good quality product, rubber toe caps on the stiletto heels feel comfortable. The best feature is the red button that lets you manually turn off the switch. Developed for marine applications, I haven't had any issues with it on my jeep for the past year and can't imagine ever having to.

I had to choose between a 30A fuse or a 30A circuit breaker. I chose the Breaker and am very happy with it. I installed one between the solar panels and the 30 amp charge controller and the other between the controller and the batteries. I didn't expect my power amp to draw power during my first desert retreat - even when it's turned off. I'm glad I tried to start my van the day before I left and was then able to flag down a passing pickup to make the jump. When you're 25 miles away in the desert and out of cell phone range, details like these matter. Much better than the built in fuse. You will NEVER need to buy another fuse as there is NO fuse in it. You can also turn off your amplifier if you need to adjust crossover settings for mid and high speakers. My subwoofer is a 15 year old Infinity BassLink.
