Beautifully crafted and quality made.

This is just a beautiful hand plane. Very well made and nicely crafted. The plane works ok out of the box, but I spent about 20 minutes of tuning and my goodness is this a thing a performer. I love it and about to order the #4 smoothing plane and #6 plane. Out of the box there are 2 things you will notice. The plane is very well made and it caked in rust proofing lubricant. Some people do not like it, but I do. Just means the manufacture went to that one extra step to get me a nice product. You

Cons
  • The plane body can warp over time.

High quality tool. on my review.

This is a high quality tool that if properly cared for will last a lifetime. Easy to set up and fine tune right out of the box. Small enough to use as a smoothing plane yet long enough to use as a jointing plane.

Pros
  • Hand Planes & Accessories
Cons
  • Can create chatter marks on softer woods.

Amazing Plane, Easy & Fast Setup, Spectacular Results

The #4 showed up two weeks ago, and I first needed it tonight. I set it up in about 10 minutes following the youtube video "Box to Bench, Rob shows what to do with a new Woodriver plane" by Rob Cosman. It takes even shavings, as thin as I'd like them (like tissue paper, as a test), and left a knotty pine 2x4 scrap as smooth as if it already had a sprayed poly finish. My #5 1/2 shows up Monday, and I've got a #7 on my list :-)

Pros
  • Smooth and does a nice job.
Cons
  • Dust and debris buildup around the blade.

It can makes a very good family gift

It makes a very good family giftI found it exactly worth the money so good plane - it is amazing how easily you can lock the position of the blade

Pros
  • Thick cast-iron base provides stability during use
Cons
  • Not designed for intricate work or detailed carving.

Worth the money for my opinion

Other than a small defect on the chip breaker this plane is beautiful. This and the woodriver #4 are the nicest planes I have ever used. Read my review on the #4 too. I really wanted a better plane than what I had and started doing research. I don't have a lot of money but I wanted a really good plane. I couldn't justify the cost of a veritas or lie nielsen but I could afford a stanley, benchdog or woodriver. After a lot of comparing I went with the woodriver. The cost hurt but again, it's the…

Pros
  • Durable construction with a thick blade and adjustable frog for long-lasting use
Cons
  • Replacement parts can be hard to source.

Good looking and functioning plane

Loving this plane so far. After unboxing and cleaning of the plane, it was only a few quick minutes at the sharpening station to get things ready to go. Cuts very nice. Would definitely buy again.

Pros
  • Adjustable mouth for varying wood types and grain patterns
Cons
  • Tends to wear down faster compared to other models.

Excellent Buy. Go get one!

Amazing value right here. So far I've used it exclusively with exotic woods such as Cocobolo. This plane's performance is simply astonishing for the price. The sale came dead flat right out the box and though the frog assembly did require a bit of tune-up, the results are simply worth it!

Pros
  • ‎Traditional
Cons
  • Limited adjustability compared to other brands.

Great bench plane! best in my review

Received the #4 Wood River Bench plane very quickly. It was in perfect condition and was very impressive out of the box. I would highly recommend this product from the provider

Pros
  • ‎14.4 x 6.1 x 3.1 inches
Cons
  • Dust and shavings can get in eyes and lungs.

best #4 bench plane

best #4 bench plane. I won't write much other than if you are in the market for a quality plane but don't have the budget of a CEO buy this thing. wonderful plane with a great iron and for the most part truly flat sole. a pleasure to work with

Pros
  • Love this plane.
Cons
  • Can easily damage the wood if not used correctly.

Great product, great price

It's hard for me not to give this plane 5 stars but I'm new to using planes and the long-term results are not out yet for me so time will tell. I went on YouTube and Rob Cosman walked me through the process of flawlessly prepping this plane. I was so impressed with how well this plane worked that I went ahead and bought the number 4 and the number 6 Wood River planes along with the small block plane in a bundle that I got on sale for 15 percent off. I found this to be a tremendous deal and now…

Pros
  • It is heavy and as a woman I had to take breaks but it worked perfectly
Cons
  • Requires a lot of physical strength to use efficiently.

Nice plane: my feedback

I bought one for each of my kids and had them shipped first to me to inspect them. They are well made, the blades are properly sharpened and they are correctly adjusted, out of the box.

Pros
  • Lightly finished Bubinga handles provide comfort and control - Soles and sides are machined flat and square within tightly held tolerances
Cons
  • Blade can rust if not stored properly.

Took a bit too much work to get it working for the price

As purchased, the throat of this plane was too narrow to allow clearance for a shaving to pass through. In order to produce any shavings or do anything except chatter across the top of a board, I had to take a mill file to the throat and widen it by a fraction of a millimeter. Once modified in this fashion, the plane works reasonably well, and produces thin shavings. However, while I accept that it is normal to have to do some adjustment of a new plane to get it working in tip top shape, for a…

Pros
  • Versatile use on both rough and finished woods
Cons
  • Can leave tracks or grooves on the surface when not used correctly.

Disapointed - my new review

Not as nice as my Wood River #5 or Wood River #62 . The finish on the lever cap was rough with burrs . The tapped hole in the frog for the lever cap screw was full of chips and the screw was tightened on top of this . Luckily the threads weren't damaged . The lateral adjustment lever was burred which had to be removed . The lever cap does not fit properly . There is very little adjustment on the screw . Loosen and the cap is too loose . An 1/8 of a turn down and the screw is too tight and you…

Pros
  • Comes with a sturdy wooden storage case for safe storage and transportation
Cons
  • Not suitable for sharpening at a steeper angle.
