EDIT: changed from 2 to 4 stars. I decided to make sure it wasn't my motherboard sound card. I borrowed a USB sound card from work for testing (just a cheap USB connector for a microphone and a sound card with audio output). To my surprise, it made a HUGE difference. I still have the issue of the clip not attaching to my earbuds without a pad, but the recording quality is much better now.
