Review on Pre-Assembled 6Ft Self-Regulating Pipe Heating Cable - 120V By HEATIT For Efficient Winter Protection by Mike Kimball

simple device, simple fix

This gizmo turned out to be the perfect fix for a troublesome winter issue. Our furnace de-humidifies the air and the condensation is pumped to the outside of the house. We get some 20 degree nights during our winters and while the condensation flowed as it should inside the house; when it hit the three or four feet of tubing outside the house we had a problem. The condensation would quickly freeze and plug the discharge line between the tube's end and the house. This in turn caused the line inside to back up and we had water all over the floor. I put the cable on the discharge line outside and plugged it in a few days before Thanksgiving. Since then we have had about twenty out of the last thirty or so nights well below freezing. The cable works as advertised and there hasn't been a drop of condensation on the floor.Yeah, the cable is a little ornery to wrap around a 3/4" flexible tube but it can be done. I also used a aluminized sort of bubble wrap over the tube and cable -- not sure if it was necessary but it was mentioned in the instructions. At any rate, I'm happy with the results.
