I use this to pump water out of a boat that has picked up water from waves or overnight rain. It will pump eight inches of water from my 14 feet in about the time it takes me to get ready and start the engine. So I'm guessing about ten gallons in about three minutes with a length of smooth transparent tubing and about a fourteen inch head. It just walks through the sand and the included grate kicks in leaves or anything big enough to stop the impeller. It does not pump well unless submerged, so the minimum bilge water depth is about two inches. The bottom line is that feet stay dry with much less effort than with a hand pump. I don't think you could sail with a big leak.
