When I think of the American standard, I think it would be easy to find a valve for my toilet as if it were a 'standard'. Not correct! When my valve started leaking I had a spare in the garage and thought it would fit. Not correct! Okay, it looks like there are two types, 2" and 3", but this is more. I have 3 inches. So my wife voluntarily goes to the nearest plumbing store to buy the right one. After a few phone calls, photos, and a toilet model number, she comes back with a flap that fits, but with a float. I can't get the float right, so here I am. It looks like there are two models of my AS, #4083-xxx and 4083-yyy. Mine is 4083 only, no extensions. Of course this fits. Not right! The clearance on this float is too big to connect to the lower neck. For me there is no (less) American standard anymore! I'll replace the guts with something from Fluidmaster.
