It is very sturdy. I use it for my 70 pound Japanese Akita. I have no worries about it breaking, so it is fine for large dogs. However, the diameter of the leash isn't very big. It is hard to hold when you need to hold it tightly against resistance (he can suddenly pull very hard if he sees a squirrel). For this reason I'd recommend this leash more for smaller (maybe 12 or 15 pounds and up) and medium sized dogs only, or for very well behaved large dogs.We have a leash of the exact same kind but it is 5/8" diameter and amazingly that little extra eighth of an inch makes a HUGE difference in the width and how easy it is to grip. I'd recommend the 5/8" diameter leashes more than this for dogs that have a good measure of strength to them.
