This is a great gravel vac when you want more control over the vacuum than you would with a large siphon. I recently switched from gravel to sand in my 15 gallon tank and it has worked great for both. As with everyone else, the slower flow allows for smaller water changes, and I was also less afraid of accidentally sucking on shrimp or snails. I've seen a few reviews complain about nothing being lifted off the bottom of the tank, and I suspect those reviewers understand fluid dynamics even less than I do - the siphon is primarily powered by gravity, hence the "force "" of the siphon will increase when you lower the "outlet" end of the hose below your aquarium. About 2.5 feet below my tank, mine has enough power to gently lift gravel.
