We often use these when remodeling bathrooms that previously had no vents. Pretty easy to install, but I don't recommend homeowners going through the roof unless they're familiar with roof repairs. The metal cover must be installed so that the side and top flanges follow the same soil pattern as the shingles around them. Don't just lay it on shingles and smear it with roof tar. It is best to hire a roofer for an hour to install the metal cover if you are unsure. It's cheaper than hiring one to fix during the rainy season after a leak is spotted. This vent cap is best for wood chips or clapboard. Terracotta tiles, metal roofs and flat roofs may not work with this type of vent cover or may be too complex.
