I bought this gate to keep our cats out of the finished basement. The opening was 54 inches and was between a regular wall and the edge of the stairs. Those goals worked absolutely perfectly. I didn't even have a bolt to attach to the wall as the instructions suggested so I used drywall anchors and the gate worked great even at that distance. The lock/unlock process is easy enough for my 5 and 8 year old boys. If you are careful while installing, you will have no problem installing this thing. I made it through without any help, although I probably could have used an extra hand to level, but I managed. The spacers provided made it easy for me to work on the part that should have been on the baseboard we have. .Don't listen to bad reviews. If you have a very wide mouth and don't want to spend too much. Get this gate. I've had them for a few weeks now and my little boys are in and out every day and doing great. Most importantly, now my pets are not allowed in this room! It's a wooden gate, so not necessarily the prettiest gate. but that's not what i need. Enjoy!
