They don't break like plastic and are the same size as for easy shifting.
The plastic shelves that come with many homemade shelves tend to break when you move the shelves around the shelf. I find it better to have a few on hand than the plastic ones. They don't break and I rarely have trouble fitting them into pre-drilled holes in the shelf.
